TL DR: The new iMac's power connector rotates when it is plugged in, aligning extra pins which carry the ethernet signal.◊ Apple Card Monthly Installments (ACMI) is a 0% APR payment option available only in the U.S. Hopefully, we'll see some answers in a future patent or an in-depth teardown of the ethernet/power combo adapter! Will this connector eventually carry other signals as well? (e.g. Which pins are for power, and which pins are for the ethernet signal? I assume the iMac uses a similar mechanism to the Lightning connector or USB-C to detect which of the two configurations the plug is in and route the signals accordingly. This ensures that circularly arranged pins will always be aligned in one of two configurations (right side up and upside down). There also appear to be ridges in the socket (yellow) that rotate the curved inner barrel of the plug (yellow) to the correct orientation during insertion (similar to a cam+follower mechanism). Thanks to closeups of the plug and the socket from a Dave2D video and an iFixit teardown, I realized that the connector actually has quite a few hidden ball pins (red arrows) that appear to correspond to contacts arranged around the inner barrel of the socket (red arrows, highlighted for visibility). This seemed to contradict the sleek design of the iMac power connector-a round barrel plug that can be plugged in at any angle.

Most ethernet connectors have 8 pins, which are necessary to carry a wide bandwidth of data. When Apple first announced that the ethernet port on the M1 iMac would be located on the power adapter, and not the back of the machine, I immediately became curious about the magnetic connector.
